Leon County Historical Society
Preserving Black Rural Heritage Across Leon County, Texas
LCHS preserves and interprets Leon County’s historic communities established by Black farmers, builders, community leaders, and veterans communities through cultural landscape preservation, oral histories, and place-based education. We protect sites, stories, and land-based traditions so they remain visible, teachable, and protected for future generations.
OUR MISSION
Renewing Communities, Cultivating Change
LCHS preserves Leon County’s historic communities established by Black farmers, builders, community leaders, and veterans in Leon County, Texas spanning the pre–Civil War and post–Civil War eras through community-centered documentation, preservation education, and descendant storytelling. Our work strengthens historical visibility, supports stewardship of historic sites, and builds learning opportunities rooted in land, memory, and legacy.
Land, Legacy, and Spirit
We believe the landscape is a living archive. LCHS documents and preserves historic places and knowledge systems held in land, memory, and community practice especially in rural communities where formal archives often failed to record everyday life, women’s leadership, and intergenerational traditions.
